For more than 30 years, the SIMATIC S7-300 has been one of the most trusted and widely used PLC systems in the world. Introduced by Siemens in 1994 as the successor to the SIMATIC S5, the S7-300 became an industry standard — known for its modular design, broad CPU lineup, and remarkable reliability across countless industrial applications.
Now, after decades of proven performance, Siemens has officially entered the phase-out period for the S7-300 and its corresponding ET 200M I/O system.

A Brief Look Back: A PLC That Defined a Generation

Over the years, it has been deployed in millions of systems worldwide, including:
-- Discrete manufacturing and machinery – assembly, packaging, and production lines.
-- Water and wastewater treatment – decentralized I/O at pumping stations and plants.
-- Energy and process industries – power generation, utilities, oil & gas.
Its adaptability, longevity, and stability earned the S7-300 a reputation for rock-solid performance — one that will keep it relevant in maintenance and service for many years, even as production ends.
Official Phase-Out Milestones
Siemens has now defined the official product lifecycle for the S7-300 / ET 200M family:
-- PM400 (Phase-Out Announcement) – October 1, 2023: Products remain available but are no longer actively marketed.
-- PM410 (Discontinuation) – October 1, 2025: New production stops. Parts will be available only as spares or for repair/exchange.
-- Spare Parts Availability – until at least October 1, 2033: Beyond that, Siemens recommends migrating to modern alternatives such as the S7-1500, S7-1200, or ET 200SP HA families.
Recommended Migration Paths

For Factory Automation
-- SIMATIC S7-1500 system
-- SIMATIC ET 200MP or ET 200SP I/O systems For Process Automation
-- SIMATIC ET 200SP HA I/O with high-availability configurations
Migration guides and conversion tools are available through Siemens to assist with configuration and code transfer from the S7-300 platform.
What This Means for Operators
Once the PM410 milestone is reached, Siemens will no longer offer the S7-300 / ET 200M as new products. Only limited spare-part quantities and repair services will be available — meaning that plant expansions and new installations will no longer be feasible using these models.
If your operations rely on the S7-300, now is the time to:
-- Secure critical spares while supply remains stable
-- Plan a migration strategy to supported PLC platforms
-- Evaluate repair and refurbishment options to extend existing hardware life
